Dinner and a Movie Nights

We spend a lot of time together, I know. Just throwing it out there…. I would like to host a potluck sometime in the next week, I thought maybe it could be a mini food class — I could do a tofu demo for like 10 minutes, then we dine! Then we could watch an educational/inspirational movie/documentary. For example, I have Turtles Can Fly right now
www.imdb.com/title/tt0424227 Perhaps a bit intense for dinner, but just as a for instance. This could just be something we do a few times during the summer, not a regular thing. Anyway, let’s talk.

I don’t know how much more time I can spend hanging out with you people. I’ve got many important things I’ve been setting aside for weeks now, such as clipping my toenails and learning how to cook poptarts. Not to mention general personal hygiene.

Sounds cool. Maybe we could make it kind of a bimonthly or monthly thing for the summer?

I’d be up for doing that. Anyone a fan of enchiladas or pico de gallo?

It’s about all I can make. So really, I hope ya are.

I could invite Jared. He would cook you a great meal, drop some racial slurs, and then show you his ass.

On second thought…maybe not.

I don’t know, that could be fun—could we do, like, a combination platter and scoop pico de gallo off jared’s ass with tofu enchiladas?

Yeah! This all sounds great. Although, I do not know who Jared is, I will decide upon meeting him if I want to scoop food off of his ass. Anyone else is game for sure. Enchiladas and pico sound great, a few of us (including myself) are vegan, just make sure you have ingredients ready. I have SUPER vegan enchilada recipes (also known as Angieladas) if we need them! Should we bring it up at the meeting? Do we want to pick a date? I volunteered my house, I am off on Friday’s and Saturdays. How about May 8th or 9th? Too soon?

I wouldn’t be able to make it that weekend, but if it works for everyone else you guys could just save me some scraps and I could pirate the movie.

Welp, seeing how May 8th my roomie and I are throwing a party down here in Lansing for my bday, I’m not sure if I’ll be sober enough to attend anything else. Or at least remember it.

And this man better be glowing if you are going to scoop my pico off of his ass. Like chiseled by the gods themselves.

For vegan folks I end up making enchiladas using potatoes as opposed to meat. I haven’t figured out much of a substitute for the cheese aside from cheese substitutes, but that feels like cheating. I figure there’s got to be some kind of veg. product that I can trade in, but hell if I know what to use.

Anyway, yea. Party at my place next weekend anyway, so I have some time to figure out something to make

Scratch next weekend at my place, party at Roberto’s instead!* Perhaps we can do this din/movie thing the 16th or the 23rd? The potatoes are a great sub for meat, and I personally don’t need a cheese substitute, although I can provide great recipes or we could just get some fake.
…..

*Happy birthday, Roberto! This makes me think that the food and beverage committee could make cupcakes or something for people’s bday for the meeting. Am I turning this into a PTA meeting?

haha. Thanks.

Alright, here’s what’s up. My roommate and I are having a party on Saturday, May 9th, as opposed to this Friday. Send me an e-mail at digital.nines@gmail.com if you are interested in coming by. I’d love to see you all down here on Saturday. It should be a good time. Drinking and usual festivities. Invite your friends.

Talk to you all later.

Everyone!

Proposal for a dinner and a movie night.
May 29th, at 7pm, my house.
What do we think? Can we do this?

Question(s): Did we want to make this more of a potluck thing, where everyone brings something, and then we go around and talk about how we made it, pass out recipes, etc. Or do we want this to be focused on one meal, and we make it together?

Movie suggestion: After the last meeting, the majority of those who came went to the bar, we discussed the movie Shortbus, several folks expressed an interest in watching it. Many of us have seen it (I own a copy) and loved it. I am concerned that this may be a difficult movie for some folks to watch in a group setting, not just for the sex, but the intense emotional response the film can bring up. so here is a link to a preview if you haven’t seen it or heard of it:
www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi2022834...

We have access (of course) to lots more movies that would be just as challenging, any other suggestions?

I’m down! But I’m not super excited about watching Shortbus with a big group of folks, although I don’t want to be a party pooper.

I vote we make Angieladas and folks bring hor d’oeurves, desserts and booze over, eh?

I like Lindsey’s idear. Does anyone have any movie recommendations they want to throw out there? Or, I guess, what kind of movie do people feel like watching? Please nothing super depressing.

Green Edge Collaborative: Stories of community creating change

Within there was this story about Supper Clubs: people regularly get together to share meals and discuss their activism. In these cases, it’s mostly about environmental/sustainability discussions, but it could be so much more!

It’s kind of the vision I had for the dinner and a movie nights, except I saw cooking discussion in the beginning. we could nix the movie and just talk, have themed discussions, work on projects, brainstorm to solve group issues, whatever. I think that food is really important in creating communities; love the thought of nourishing people’s bodies and sharing ideas. We all have to eat, why not eat together! Even if we begin with dinner and a movie, it will evolve to what the group needs. They could be mini monthly/weekly retreats. Anyway, seeing other communities working together is inspiring.

With regard to this months event, let’s bring it up at the meeting today! In thinking of movies, all I can think of are at least mildly depressing. I was thinking of spike lee movies (Do the right thing, Crooklyn, jungle fever, etc), we could stick with the shortbus director and watch Hedwig and the Angry Inch, I have all the dave chappell tv show on the dvd, we could watch controversial ones, I have a shit ton of movies, we could just pick one from that pile the day of, or whatever.

With regard to food, Angieladas sound great; Roberto, would you like to make them and lead the food discussion?

We’ll all talk later today!

Yessss, I like where this is going. Definitely should be brought up at the meeting tonight.

At the meeting, most people said Sunday, May 31 was a better night for them! So, Sunday, 7pm, Mi casa. More info TBA

Ok! So the theme for this Dinner and a Movie is Southern Cooking. For the movie, I was thinking that we could just pick from what I have (I have a shit ton of movies) while we are there.

I requested that the food be vegan (no meat, no dairy, no eggs, no honey, no byproducts). I plan on making a gumbo, and maybe something else. If you aren’t sure what to make, here are some suggestions: Garlic Grits, fried tofu, baked mac and chreese, cornbread, hushpuppies, collards, Iced tea, watermelon, salad, etc. If you need a recipe or help with a recipe, please call or email me. I’ve got lots of cookbooks and substitution suggestions.

STEEL MAGNOLIAS.

Steel Magnolias is definitely on the list.

Just wanted to say that if anyone is stressing about the southern theme, forget about it! bring whatever you want. Fruit is always great, booze (if you are over 21), iced tea (make it sweet, then it’s southern!), or just plan on doing a load of dishes. Whateva, I just want to eat and chat with you all.

I am making: Gumbo Z, Dirty Rice, Pecan Pie, fried okra. I may try to get some garlic corn bread made, but we’ll see. I work at greentree from 8-4pm, I’ll be home preppin after that. Feel free to call the store if you have any questions 772 3221, my phone after 4pm — 773 0559. Otherwise I’ll see ya tomorrow!
