Thoughts:

  • If you actually need all the space, the $/GB is more important
  • If you don’t need all the space and you
    • care more about wear, then the $/TBW is more important, and a bigger drive will get you more wear but the $/TBW number had better be a lot better or it would make more sense to just replace the drive in a few years with a better/cheaper one(assuming no labor costs)
    • care more about performance, then a 2x larger drive will have 2x performance (I don’t have $/perf numbers here)
  • For a given workload, getting the same drive model but 2x the size will give you 2x performance(2x chips in parallel) and 2x drive life(due to wear leveling)
