Changemakers Competition in Global Maternal Health¶

Ashoka and Engender Health’s Maternal Health Task Force have partnered to create an innovative new program designed to transform the field of maternal health globally. Interested applicants are invited to submit their ideas to strengthen maternal health care systems and provide access to the services and resources that mothers require.

The Young Champions of Maternal Health Program will use the Changemakers online platform to identify 16 young leaders — called Young Champions — from around the world who will spend nine months working abroad on a maternal health project while being mentored by a seasoned Ashoka Fellow in the field of maternal health. All Young Champions will receive a monthly stipend and financial support for travel, accommodation, insurance, and visa costs.

Candidates for the Young Champion program must be between 18 and 35 years of age and be proficient in English (fluency in written and spoken English). Criteria for the selection of Young Champions include successful completion of at least a B.A. (or equivalent degree) and clearly articulated plans for continued studies or professional development, a track record of involvement in public health, and a demonstrated commitment to dedicating their careers to the improvement of maternal health, especially in developing countries. Candidates must pass Ashoka’s criteria for social entrepreneurs, namely — a new idea; creativity; entrepreneurial quality; social impact of the idea; and ethical fiber.

Additionally, maternal health organizations can enter to win one of three $5,000 in-kind Changemakers prizes. The organizational component of the competition is open to all types of organizations (citizen sector or charitable organizations, private companies, or public entities) from all countries. The program will consider all entries that: reflect the theme of the competition — “Healthy Mothers, Strong World: The Next Generation of New Ideas for Maternal Health;” demonstrate system-changing and paradigm-shifting solutions that improve maternal health, especially in resource-poor settings; indicate growth beyond the stage of idea, concept, or research; and are submitted in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, or Arabic.
