Mark Regnerus is an outspoken homophobe who teaches sociology at UT. He stirred up nationwide controversy in 2012 upon releasing a study with the conclusion that children with gay or lesbian parents are worse off than those with straight parents. The study was scientifically unsound and funded by a conservative source, the Witherspoon Institute. Regnerus’ research received widespread criticism and was largely debunked and disavowed by the social science community.

Regnerus continues to defend this study and has on multiple occasions expressed other homophobic or reactionary views. During a 2014 speech, he made inaccurate and bigoted claims about the “normalization of gay men’s sexual behavior,” and has stated his belief that one’s religion “should inform what you teach and what you research.”

Mark Regnerus is a hateful bigot whose presence endangers LGBTQ students.

Administrative response: UT’s only official response to Regnerus’ bigoted, unscientific “research” was a statement of disavowal from the sociology department chair, allowing this homophobe to continue teaching and spreading his toxic ideology.
