May 10 2009 Collective Council Meeting

Agenda

  • 501c3-ification reportback and questions for the group. 10 minutes.
  • A discussion about the fact that we only seem to have 10 members?
  • A presentation of the 2009 Programming Committee Budget. We would ideally review, discuss, modify and ratify it. It would be very helpful for everyone to take a peek at it, post questions, and have some pre-meeting discussion. You can see it here → spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=ptoIE0n...
It is not totally done yet, but it will be prior to the meeting.
  • Related to this is the Mobile Bike Repair Project. This is a youth internship program that still does not have the Collective Council’s blessing. A proposal will be presented to partner with Urban Youth Action’s Summer Internship program for 6 weeks during July and August. UYA will be paying the wages of 4-8 teenage youth to work for around 30 per week during this time. The first week and a half will be a 40 hour training program to teach the kids basic bike mechanics. Then the kids will ride with their Free Ride crew leaders to mostly pre-determined scheduled sites to fix bikes and distribute helmets, hauling all the gear by bike. There are associated expenditures outlined in the budget. Bring on the questions.

I’d like to add to the agenda: a woman named Elizabeth who works at the EEFC proposed a mutual aid program between Free Ride and EEFC. Obviously we eat EEFC’s food. So her idea was that, as a way of “giving back,” we should consider doing like 30-minute once or twice a week free service workshops at EEFC… for little stuff that people need that they might not go to Free Ride for, like changing flats, pumping up tires, making other very minor adjustments.

I personally like the idea of exporting Free Ride’s abilities outside of the Free Ride building—into schools, and public places potentially—because it will help raise awareness about Free Ride. It’s a way for us to educate more people than we could normally reach about uber-basic bike mechanics, plus it’ll make Free Ride look really like a community project. Elizabeth’s proposition is an intriguing one but we’d have to discuss the implications/payment/staffing issues. This will be addressed by the… programming committee right? I don’t know Elizabeth, she just told me this last time I went to pick up food for FR. She said she knows Erok.

I’ll be out of town for this meeting. However, my tenure at CJ liaison, which was supposed to last 6 months, has now lasted over a year. Someone else please take over! I’m not interested in doing it any more.

I bumped the 501c3 down to 10 min because the mobile bike shop proposal looks big and pressing, while the Duquesne Law interns won’t be back until August. Also, who are you ‘freeyerself’?

Minutes are attached.
Forgot to mention on there that the CJ liaison is now Rachel.
