General Information

blue moon fund makes grants to nonprofit organizations that have developed innovative, holistic approaches to improving human quality of life in harmony with the natural world. On this page you will find general information about our application process and requirements for funding.

Letters of Inquiry and Full Proposals

As a first step, blue moon accepts letters of inquiry (LOIs) through our online system. The LOI is used to gauge the fit of your organization and project with the fund’s mission and initiatives. If it is determined that your project might fit into our funding portfolio a blue moon staff person will contact you and you may be invited to submit a full proposal. We strongly encourage you to read the descriptions of our three major initiatives as well as peruse our past grants before submitting an LOI.

Full proposals are submitted through our online system by invitation only. Please note, that in order to submit a full proposal you must be contacted by a blue moon staff member.

Nonprofit Status

blue moon fund provides funding for domestic and foreign nonprofit organizations.

Here are the basic classifications of nonprofit organizations:

  • 501©(3) – A U.S. based organization that has applied for exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service. If you are a 501©(3) organization, you should have received a determination letter from the IRS stating your exempt status.
  • Private Foundation – A U.S. based organization that has applied for exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service. You should have received a letter from the IRS indicating your exempt status and that your organization is a private foundation.
  • Foreign Equivalency – A foreign organization that would be considered tax exempt if it were based in the U.S. (In order to qualify for foreign equivalency you will need to complete both foreign grant affidavit forms and attach them on the last page of your grant application. We will review the forms and let you know if you qualify for this special classification.)
  • Expenditure Responsibility – All other organizations which do not fit into any of the above categories. This classification will require the organization to keep the grant funds in a separate bank account until expended and will require more detailed reporting.

Language and Currency

blue moon only accepts applications and reports in English and U.S. dollars.
