• Know your client = take the time to research the organization’s focus. Look up the organization on Google, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.

• Always keep your pitch SHORT and CONVINCING (make sure the organization knows that you are the right person for the job).

• Be professional but enthusiastic

• Say who you are, but don’t brag. All you need to express is why you’re perfect, in a sentence or two. You need to show that you’ve done this successfully before, but you don’t want to sound like you’re overselling yourself.

• Mention the work you’ve done in the past. Keep it brief and provide a link(s) to past work.

• Send an email two days after the pitch to make sure you and your client are still on the same page

• keep 4 things in mind: Listen – Listen – Reflect – Identify.

• Listening has three major bonuses

1. You get a gist of the potential clients needs, background and expectations 2. It shows respect and patience 3. Allows you to absorb what is important to the client and reflect with only the necessary comments and suggestions.

• Always remember that most clients are there to hire you for your expertise. Most of the time they do not want to get an ear full of technical jargon, they are there to allow you to provide a solution via their communication with you.

• Reflect:
  1. Stay focused on the clients needs and expectations
  2. Interject ideas that might improve on the project
  3. Be personal and confident in your ability to be a great consultant

• Identify = a collection of listening and reflecting: After learning your client’s expectations and needs you have a much better chance of selling your products and services.
  1. Try to get a good idea of what type of person/ client you are dealing with and respond accordingly
  2. Let the client know you have been listening by going over what they said and how it can work with the proposed project
  3. Be professional but friendly, give your prospect a reason to want to work with you

• dress nicely: dressing for the part can build confidence, and makes you look professional
• be relaxed and candid
• if presenting, make eye contact with people, and try not to read notes directly
• practice pitching beforehand with friends or in front of a mirror if you’re nervous
• don’t take them through the pages too quickly (older generation sometimes has trouble keeping up if you dart from page to page)
