If you still think you can do the job yourself then follow the steps given below.

  • With the help of a utility knife, cut through the paint and caulk holding the interior trim in place. Work a pry bar into the opening. Put pressure on this to pull the interior trim away from the wall so that you can deal with any glue, paint or caulk that still might be present. Repeat the same with the exterior trim.
  • Holding each section of the door tightly with both hands, lift it out of the running track, pulling the door backwards out of the frame. Remove one at a time.
  • Once the trim has been removed, you can then remove any nails that you have left behind. Use a screw driver and remove screws on the top, right, left and bottom sides of the sliding door.
  • Apply a layer of flashing, an adhesive along the bottom sill of the door frame.
  • After you have purchased a new sliding glass door, with the help of your friend, lift and carry the door frame inside the house and push it into its position in the large opening. Don’t install the door backwards.
  • Use the same screws which you removed before and use them in fixing the material of the new door frame and tighten until they are safely embedded in the door frame.
  • After you are done getting rid of all the debris from the rails, with the help of your friend, install carefully the sliding glass panels and handle.
  • You can then nail the interior as well as exterior trim back in place, once you see the door is securely in place.
Put in the screen as the final step in installing your glass door.
