Phoning Detainees

Introduce yourself
*We are a group of volunteers
*We can stay in touch with you by phone and occasional visits
*We provide friendship to detainees
*Can’t give advice but might be able to find the right people or organisations to help

Establish detainee’s needs
*has legal adviser?
*knows about applying for bail?
*has adequate access to healthcare
*has any other friends/family visiting?
other… “If you tell me more about your situation, I can see if there are other ways we can try to help”

Signpost the detainee
*Legal surgeries at Morton Hall take place on Tuesdays
*Detainees can find BID’s (bail for immigration detainees) bail notebook in the library to help them to apply for bail
*We can refer them to Medical Justice
*Childrens Links – Give priority to family issues but can help with any welfare queries. Detainees can access this service in ‘The Hub’ every day, between 9.30 and 11am.

Finally, arrange visit or arrange to call again
Make sure you have the following details for visiting:
full name
detainee number (e.g. A1234AC)
date of birth.

Give detainee MHDVG contact details so they can leave messages for you: 07758 604 293 mhvg(at)riseup(dot)net
