The Role of Art in Social Movements: Justseeds/Visual Resistance Artists’ Cooperative Tells Their Story

Come out to hear Detroit’s Bec Young and Lansing’s own Dlyan Miner unfold the history of Justseeds and sketch out their viewpoints about art as a tool for movement building.

Justseeds/Visual Resistance Artists’ Cooperative is a community of artists who believe in the power of personal expression in concert with collective action to transform society. They are a decentralized and democratically organized group, spread across a dozen cities, who produce individual fine artworks, collective installations and print portfolios, and regularly create illustrations, posters and design work for social justice organizations and causes.

Two documentaries for Pride Week

Two short documentaries, “Trevor” and “Freeheld,” will be shown today (April 16) at 2 p.m. in the Bovee University Center Auditorium, followed by discussion. These documentaries focus on the challenges faced by the LGBT community. A reception will follow in the Multicultural Education Center, Bovee University Center 125. This event is part of Pride Week and is co-sponsored by the Office of Gay and Lesbian Programs, Gay Straight Alliance and SBAC. (Submitted by: Sarah Avery, Multicultural Education Center, phone 7318, wojto1sa@cmich.edu).

Also:

The award-winning documentary “FLOW – How Did a Handful of Corporations Steal Our Water?” will be shown on Sunday, April 26 at 7:00 p.m. at the Park Library Auditorium on the CMU campus in Mt. Pleasant.

The movie documents the world-wide water crisis, focusing especially on India, Africa, China and Michigan. The Michigan part of the film arises from citizens’ opposition to the Nestle Waters/Ice Mountain extraction of public waters from Mecosta county. The film sheds light on the World Bank’s involvement in water privatization and water-for-profit.

As an expression of environmental concern, this documentary is sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Central Michigan University, the Mt. Pleasant Area Diversity Group, the Multicultural Education Center at CMU and the Michigan Citizen for Water Conservation. Admission is free and everyone who is concerned about the future of our water supply is invited to attend.

For more information, please contact Dr. Gisela Moffit at 989-772-1602 or via email: moffi1g@cmich.edu.

Soup and Substance: Answering the Nation’s Call to Service

Join us from noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, in the Bovee University Center Gold Room for a hearty bowl of soup and warm bread and consider the question: Are you ready to serve? Conference for Comprehensive Immigration Reform
Organizers of May 1st Marches from Los Angeles, San Antonio, New York, Chicago, Detroit, etc.
will gather in Detroit, Michigan on Saturday June 13 & Sunday June 14, 2009

Dear Activist:

After the great success of the May 1st marches which were held in over 100 cities, Latinos United in Michigan invites all activists of the

Immigration movement to participate in the “Conference for Comprehensive Immigration Reform” which will be in Detroit, Michigan on

Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14. The purpose of the conference is to democratically discuss the steps to be followed in order to

accomplish objectives for Comprehensive Immigration Reform and which are suitable to the needs of immigrants. Taking into account

the expectations created by President Barack Obama in his declarations about Comprehensive Immigration Reform and the current political,

social, & economic conditions. We need to acknowledge the necessity to continue our quest to democratically pursue the fulfillment of our

objectives. For those activists who wish to attend the “People’s Summit” (national event), on Sunday June 14 we will have a tour of the city of Detroit.

Detroit has been devastated by the economic crisis, social, energy, environmental ills, etc (Ironically, this crisis was caused by the same forces

that oppose Comprehensive Immigration Reform) At the end of the tour, we will join the “People’s Summit”. In this event we will state our

position with respect to Comprehensive Immigration Reform before other groups of activists who will meet here in Detroit to participate in

this event.
