Q: By default, every message sent to my list gets the name of the list added to the subject line (enclosed in square brackets). How do I change this?

A: Edit the list config and under “Sending/receiving” you can change the “Subject tagging” setting. If you leave the value blank, there will be no custom text in the subject line of messages. Note that this setting is very different from subject, which is the short summary of what the list is for which is printed in the list directory and on the list information page.

Por que meu rodapé não funciona?

Q: I have edited the message.footer file. Why don’t see the footer in the list messages?

A: By default, the footer is sent out as an attachment. The advantage of this is that it is not included in replies. Unfortunately, this means that some people don’t see it. To change the type, go to the list’s admin page and there under “Edit List Config” → “Sending/reception” you can change the “Attachment type” option from “mime” to “append”.

Como fecho minha lista?

É muito fácil:

How to do I get a list of subscribers?

You can download a list of all the emails subscribed to your list. To do this:

  • Login using the email address which is an owner for the list in question.
  • Go to the list information page.
  • Click on the ‘Review Members’ link on the left hand side.
  • Click ‘Dump’
  • Choose ‘File → Save Page As…’ in your web browser.

Can I block annoying people?

Unfortunately, there is no way to block certain email addresses. If you are running an open discussion, you can unsubscribe the person and ask them to not re-subscribe. If that fails, you can always set the “subscribe” variable to “anyone, authorization is asked to owners (owner)”. This way, every time someone tries to subscribe, you (the owner) must approve it. This will only work if the send option is set to private.

Emails

The maximum email size is restricted to 500k. If you need, we might be able to raise the limit, although probably not. There are many reasons to limit the size of list email:

  • First and foremost, large attachments are not needed because you can create a “shared web space.” Shared web spaces allow a list subscriber to upload a file using their web browser. When you send out an email, include the URL of the file in the shared web space (an example URL might be lists.riseup.net/www/d_read/newsletter/.... Other subscribers can then download the file using their web browser (some lists restrict uploading to editors, depending on how permissions are set up).
  • Typically, a large attachment will not be relevant for every member of the list. Only those people who are interested in the attachment should have to spend the time to download it.
  • Your message will be more effective if it is brief. No one wants a book in their inbox. If you have a lot which needs to be said, say it quickly and provide a way for people to get more information on the topic if they are interested.
  • Large attachments can be very costly for us. We have a lot of bandwidth, but we pay for what we use. For example, suppose you sent a 1 meg PDF flyer as an attachment to a list with 100 subscribers. All you have to upload is the 1 meg file, but our humble little server then must send out 100 megs. Also, we have to archive the attachment and keep backups of it forever. As long as message size is small, this is manageable.
  • The infrastructure for internet email is not geared to handle large attachments. Basically, big files mess everything up. For this reason, most mail servers restrict the size of email.

Why is my email sent to the moderator for approval and/or rejected?

There are several possible reasons for this.

  • I am not subscribed to the list.
    • Most lists only allow members to post. Thus, even if you are an editor or owner of the list, you will not be able to post if you are not a member if the list does not allow it. You should subscribe by following these steps.
  • I am an owner/editor of the list, but my posts are referred to the editor or rejected.
    • You may be sending your emails from a different email address. For example, lets say you have email1@riseup.net, but you also have email2@gmail.com. Email1 is the owner/editor of the list, but email2 is not. If you send an email FROM email2 to the list, it will be held for moderator approval. To fix this: Add your second email address as an owner/editor.

The default “reply to” header on all lists is set to the sender, and not the list.
This is for many reasons:

  • Years and years of netiquette have shown that it is very bad policy to ever set “reply to” to be the list.
  • Almost all email clients include the option of ‘Reply to All’. If you hit reply to all, the list address is included in the recipient list of your message. This way, you have an easy way to choose whether to reply to the list or just the sender. If the list is set to automatically reply to the list, then their is no convenient way to reply to the sender.
  • If a person doesn’t know what they are doing, it is much better that they reply to the sender. This helps prevent accidental personal email from clogging up the list. Many lists play out this sorry scenario: someone inadvertently replies to the entire list and sends out a personal message, then someone else sends out mail explaining how to reply just to the person, then someone else complains that the second person should not have instructed the whole list on this, then a fourth person tells everyone to shut up, and the whole thing snowballs out of control. We have seen lists with over 10 emails a day that is nothing but this kind of
    junk traffic.
  • If the person knows what they are doing, it is very easy for them to reply to the correct list address.
  • If someone leaves a vacation program running (where any mail gets an automated response that the person is on vacation) and the “reply to” is set to be the list, this can create an endless mail loop that can actually crash the machine that hosts the list. It has happened to riseup.net before and caused great pain for us and for all the list subscribers who opened their mailbox to find five thousand messages. Mailman, the most popular open source mailing list manager, is particularly susceptible to this. We have switched to a mailing list manager which is much better about detecting infinite mail loops (sympa). However, the new system is unlikely to be perfect, and we would rather not tempt fate.

Given all that, if you are still convinced you need it changed, do this:

  • click your subscriptions
  • click on the admin link for the list in question
  • click on Edit List Config
  • click on Sending/Reception
  • change the option for Reply Address
  • under that, set the respect of existing header field to forced
  • click Update.

Inscrição e convite

Como convidar alguém para minha lista?

There is currently no web interface to inviting people to your list. However, you can do it over email.

Invitation is disabled by default because it opens a major security hole for private lists. If you have a private list do not enable invitation.

To enable the invite command:

  • Go to your list’s information page
  • Follow the links ‘List Admin’ and then ‘Privileges’.
  • Choose an option other than impossible for ‘invite’
  • Click update.

To then actually invite people to your list, send email to sympa@lists.riseup.net with the following body:

 INVITE list-name email-to-invite
 QUIT

For example, to invite the prez to the list anarchism101@lists.riseup.net:

 INVITE anarchism101 president@whitehouse.gov<br>QUIT

The person invited will get an email notification of the invite. If they reply to the email, they will get subscribed.

You can include multiple INVITE commands. At the end of the email, put the QUIT command, so that any signature is not interpreted as a command. Do not use the full address of your list in the invite command: this will cause it to fail.

Note: you also probably want to set the list’s subscribe option to approved (this is found under “Privileges”). Otherwise, the person you invite will have to reply twice to the invite (once for the invite and another time for the subscription confirmation).

Q: I am converting a list from another list provider. Is it possible to simply add all the subscribers at once, or does each person need to subscribe individually?

  5. Clique em ‘Add subscribers’

We have disabled the quiet button. This button allowed you to mass subscribe people without sending them a notice. To prevent abuse, we have temporarily disabled this until we can come up with a permanent solution.

Note: please be very careful and respectful when subscribing other people. It is against riseup.net policy to allow a list admin to subscribe people without their consent. This practice will lead to the deletion of your list.

O que significa “FYI: automatic_del”?

List owners often receive this cryptic message:

FYI command automatic_del list <listname> from <subscriber address> validated by listmaster
 (no action needed)

You will receive this notice when attempting to subscribe an address which is not receiving email. When you add a new subscriber, they are sent a ‘welcome to the list’ message. If this welcome message bounces back as undeliverable, then that address is automatically deleted from the subscription list.

  4. Clique na mensagem para mostrá-la.
  5. Clique no botão tag this mail for deletion.

Pronto.
