Nicholas I of Russia issued a special edict in the spring of 1826 “so that the city of Sevastopol is no longer named Akhtiar, but is instead always referred to as Sevastopol.” In the year 1804, the city of Sevastopol was designated as the principal military port for the Black Sea Fleet. Its bay is regarded as the biggest on the Black Sea, the first in Europe, and the third in the world natural harbour in terms of ease for mooring ships, behind Hong Kong and Sydney octordle. |
