How Boilers Work And What Is Their Use Onboard?

Whether it has a diesel engine as the main form of propulsion or is steam powered, a ship without a boiler is really hard to imagine. In one form or another, a boiler is always found on a ship. Two or more boilers will be provided to produce high temperature, high pressure steam if a ship is steam powered and as the main propulsion system, if it is carrying a diesel engine then one or two smaller boilers will be used for running various ship’s machinery and its services.

How boilers work

A boiler is basically a machine with the simplest arrangement of the internal parts. Its main job is to make high pressure steam. The feed water that is supplied to the boiler drum utilizes the heat of the energy which is released by burning the fuel. The burning fuel’s energy is stored in the form of steam with high pressure and temperature. Inside the boiler, the fuel is burnt in a combustion chamber. Through a separate arrangement air is supplied to this combustion chamber to complete combustion and attain high efficiency. The heat which is generated in this combustion chamber is transferred from the boiler drum to the water through a large surface area which enables the highest rate of energy transfer.

The energy from the fuel burning are used for a number of purposes, out of which the 2 major are for superheating the steam from the boiler drum and for heating feed water to produce steam.

The feed water that enters the boiler is pre-heated with the help of an economizer through which the feed water passes before entering the boiler in order to increase the efficiency of the boiler. The boiler’s exhaust gas is also put to use by making it pass over an air heater, which basically heats up the combustion air entering the furnace. Therefore, even the energy which comes out of the boiler is not permitted to go to waste which increases the system’s overall efficiency.
