Perhaps this can be thought of as a bridge that connects the good intentions of benevolence to wisely chosen, beneficial action. Or maybe as an other-focused benevolence (e.g. one can be “benevolent” in the abstract, perhaps, but one has goodwill towards a particular person or people).
An extreme exemplar of this might be someone like Gandhi, who even when he was trying to thwart the designs of an opponent, did so with goodwill towards them and with an attitude of trying to help them to exit gracefully from the injustice they were knotted up in.
