png? what png? – thought I before posting this comment.

Then after posting it, I saw the png. It may have been uploaded in the time it took me to post this comment?

Then when clicking on “view slidshow” i hit a bug. Some one needs to file a bug report?

Re the png itself – I am not sure about including Eire before asking them. And on the map, northern England needs to be indicated as a region not a city.

I can only make this work by downloading the gallery, which is a bit cranky (or else I’m a bit cranky…hmmmnnn…that’s a possibility I suppose).

Agree with Bou’s point about Eire. What’s going on with that 2nd image? Greyed out bits?

seems to have been fixed, all showing up fine for me now.

i think the problem is that it is in the uk network and there’s some weird permissions in place, even when a document is public. Mara: i’ve sent you a direct link via email. I’m at work so can’t post it here, could you possibly do that in the comments? Protag: the grey areas are regional imc’s and the blobs city ones. I meant to do a key but ran out of time.

JimDog: sorry, but I don’t understand what you are talking about? Do you want me to post a link from an email in here? What link and what email? Sorry if I’m being thick, I got a cold again.

Can see them now…

JD – I appreciate the work on the grey bits but I think it’s diplomatically problematic to differentiate IMCs in this way.

Surely if you’re outside a “city” but in its region you’ll just use your nearest IMC, on a “regional” basis. So functionally there is no distinction.

I know Scotland and Northern don’t really have a single home city – and I think it’s useful in some way to ackowledge that. And I think name changes (didn’t Nottingham become Nottinghamshire at one stage?) are useful for trying to get the inclusiveness thing happening…and I can see that the the grey area is an attempt at the same out-reachy kind of thing.

But I think at this time it isn’t going to be helpful to illustrate this concept in that particular way…

As long as the map is this kind of size the ((i)) does not need to sit above a particular city…just, um, in the region somewhere?

(Also, as far as Northern goes, we haven’t really done any outreach in the farthest North West so I’d hesitate to have the greyness reach quite that far)

well the regions were in response to feedback from a member of imc bristol who felt that the original (with northern etc as a single blob) didn’t really work hey humbug hoodle :-)

Nice one!

I too tend to prefer the blocks version rather than the greyed out area.

Of course, this reopens the whole debate about the relationship between local/national in Indymedia UK which has been a point of some contention before. (Cards on the table: I’m a localist, at least for these purposes.)
