Welcome¶
This group was formed from an e-mail list of adopted, fostered and trafficked people that was created following the Dream Mapping Adoption and Foster Care Abolition presentation at the 2020 Allied Media Conference. Since then, beginning with our first hang-out in December 2020, adopted, fostered, and trafficked people have met to build relationships with one another while learning about abolition movements, and imagining what the abolition of systems of Family Regulation, Surveillance, Policing, and Separation would look like.
We want all who want to join in to be able to gather with us, however, there is no pressure or expectation to arrive or to be part of meetings or activate on any level!
Guidelines¶
Anyone within the group may facilitate a general session and/or create their own affinity or working group. Impromptu co-working groups, meditation groups, hang outs etc. are welcome and encouraged! Any member is welcome to invite others affected by systems of Family Regulation, Surveillance, Policing, and Separation at their discretion. While this space embraces abolition of the Family Regulation Systems, choosing to identify as “an abolitionist” is not required to participate.
Meeting Practices¶
- Forming a Facilitation Team
We’re so excited you’re going to facilitate! There’s been a lot of success in folks working in small teams to host and hold a meeting. Please reach out to the group for support with any part of the process: scheduling, outreach, planning an agenda, etc. Folks have been awesome at supporting each other, and growing our facilitation skills over time.
- Scheduling
Facilitators should feel empowered/authorized to schedule in a way that is easeful for the facilitator. A facilitator may choose to propose a meeting date that works for them, or poll the group to set a meeting time using a tool like When2Meet or Doodle. Please include an agenda to the group before the meeting in the body of the email and a link to the pad you’re working in (see links to ongoing note-pads below in descriptions of meeting spaces.) Folks appreciate receiving a reminder e-mail about all meetings
- Outreach
Upcoming meeting information lives on this Wiki! and is supported by e-mail outreach to our group. Some things to include in your outreach to announce an upcoming meeting:- Time/Day of Meeting + a timezone converter
- This timezone converter lets you select a specific day, time, and timeszones you want to represent:
- Meeting link
- An agenda + any materials folks can read ahead of time
- Notes about accessibility measures / call for access needs
- Past meeting notes
- Time/Day of Meeting + a timezone converter
- Note Taking
There is no set format for note-taking, but generally we record who facilitated, who was present in the meeting, an agenda, resources, announcements, and comments from folks who gathered. We’ve been trying a practice of making comments anonymous as an expression of collective voice.
- Accessibility
- Closed Captioning
- Community Agreements
This set of agreements comes to us from the Poli Ed affinity group space, and is a living set of agreements:- Take care of yourself
- Take Space, Make Space
- Speak from your own experience/”I” statements
- Check your Assumptions
- Say it ugly
- Share lessons learned; Leave identities of others
- Stay curious
- Recognize intent; Address impact
- Express, don’t IMPRESS.

Political Education¶
Description:
We are hoping to create a collective learning space. Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions, access support or needs, or general feedback. Please know that you are welcome to join this space and discussion with or without having finished readings. Your lived experiences and insights are important and valid contributions to what we are working to build, so we want to emphasize that this affinity group should not be viewed as a stressor.
There have also been some “pop-up” Poli Ed spaces. See below!
This space was started December 12, 2021
Phase 2:
Focus: Proposing and Developing “Points of Unity”
We will continue to use the PoliEd space as a reading and discussion series, examining ways other groups, past and present, have expressed something akin to “Points of Unity,” beginning with Sins Invalid’s 10 Points of Disability Justice. We are going to meet bi-weekly and alternate between two times to hopefully be more accessible to folks living in Asia and Europe.
Parallel to this, we imagine creating a small working group that writes a “points of unity” document, and shares it out to the larger group as a proposal, and using PoliEd as a space for building interest and momentum towards this project.
As a reminder, if folks are excited about different PoliEd offerings, please know that is also welcome. This is an autonomous learning space and folks should feel empowered to convene additional spaces you want to hold within the group. Our group is what we collectively make of it.

- At our last meeting, we filled out the google form in an attempt to gauge how to best move through large chunks of readings. Unfortunately there was an exact tie on how to break it up, so, in an effort to keep the meetings consistent we have decided to finish up Part 1 of the book. We will set aside time within the meeting to chat more about how to move through and chunk up assigned readings. Also, if you are the person who replied being interested in facilitating the next meeting, can you please direct reply back to me individually to chat more? I made the form without having the option to see emails for the folks who filled out the form. Whoops!

We will begin with the Introduction and Part 1, Section 1: The Color of America’s Child Welfare System. We’ll start off with a few discussion questions and points of reflection. It would also be great for folks to come with their own discussion question as well. We are hoping to create a collective learning space, and would like to hear what spoke to you from the reading. Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions, access support or needs, or general feedback.
