my god Taylor that article was horrifying.

this article pokes at a huge concern in the immigration issue.

It’s not a question of being illegal or legal. It’s a question of being brown in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Good piece on today’s Democracy now! about the UN conference on racism:

www.democracynow.org/2009/4/20/more_cou...

The Racism video — I wish they would have laid out the issue in simpler terms from the start, because I had to slowly piece it together for the whole video. And what I ended up with was this:

The UN was holding a conference on racism. It was going to discuss issues of racism and actions to take to get through them. The US government bought into what Israel’s? lobbyists said it was going to be about without even reading about it and decided to boycott the conference all together. Many other Western nations followed suit. And basically it’s a step backwards for fixing issues of racism and discrimination?

Is that much basically correct?

I like the discussions we have at the free school for clarification if for no other reasons.

I’ve been keeping my eyes and ears open recently for information coming from/about the struggle in Central America, especially due to the recent election of FMLN candidate Mauricio Funes in El Salvador. I know that more than a few folks have expressed excitement/interest in that particular election.

The following is a pretty good piece about El Salvador which specifically outlays the importance of talking about the past (history)…something that OUR president has been vocally against in too many occassions.

I would like to recommend kateharding.net. It’s a fat-positive blog that’s frequently hilarious.

Also: vegansofcolor.com, thedailybeast.com, slate.com (the latter two are news sites, the former is a blog).

I should mention that when I say “it’s a fat-positive blog that’s frequently hilarious,” I mean that the writers are funny and clever. I don’t mean to imply it’s hilarious because it’s fat-positive.

You may have heard stuff about Eduardo Galeano in recent days. Hugo Chavez recently gave Obama a copy of Galeano’s classic book on Latin American History called “The Open Veins of Latin America.” Many of us have been great fans of Don Eduardo for many years. When I used to work in the Book Mark, my co-worker and I would sometimes read to each other selections from his book “Days and nights of love and war” and we would freak out about how powerful his words are. Also, for those of you who went to our first free school meeting, Galeano was the guy who was talking about the train that arrives without a trian in that movie clip i showed. Anyway, on today’s telesurtv.net page (really good news source for those who speak spanish), they posted up an old essay of his written on new year’s eve of 1999. I did a quick search and found the english version for ya’ll:
