Apple’s new iPod Photo: you may not need it. You definitely want it!
When Apple introduced the original iPod less than four years ago, they forever changed the way people experience music and share it with others. For the first time, music enthusiasts could carry their entire collection in their pocket and manage their music library with ease on the computer. Now Apple has done the same for photographers with the new iPod Photo.

Available in 40GB and 60GB configurations, the newest members of the iPod family enable you to carry thousands of digital photos alongside your music collection, and display them on a high-resolution color screen—all within a tiny device that weighs just 6.4 ounces. With the iPod Photo, you can also create slideshows and view them on big-screen televisions and projectors. Somewhat limited battery life was one of the few objections anyone had with earlier iPod models, but that’s not the case with the iPod Photo; its extended-life rechargeable lithium-ion battery has enough power for up to 15 hours of music playback or 5 hours of slideshows.
According to Apple CEO Steve Jobs, the “next big thing” is having both your photos and music with you wherever you go. “Everyone has a digital camera, and wants to enjoy and share their growing library of digital photos wherever they are.”
The iPod Photo comes complete with the latest version of Apple iTunes software, which enables Mac and PC users to manage their music on the computer, and then transfer the files to the iPod. With iTunes, Mac users can also transfer photos and image albums to iPod Photo (either automatically or manually). Those using Windows PCs can transfer their images to iPod Photo using either Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 or later, or Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0.
Browsing images on the iPod Photo’s crisp color screen is fast and easy. A handy thumbnail view displays a grid of 25 images at a time. You can also use the device’s Click Wheel to scroll through your images at blazing speed. A click of the Select button fills the full display with the selected image.

In the default mode, iPod Photo optimizes images for browsing and slideshow playback by creating files that are about 815K each. With over 65,000 colors, the 2-inch color LCD provides great resolution both indoors and out.
The iPod photo offers photographers an additional benefit that we found quite significant when traveling: it can be configured for use as a portable storage device. This feature, combined with an optional media card reader, enables you to transfer full-resolution files from your camera’s memory card to iPod Photo. Then you can erase the card and keep on shooting. When you return home, it’s a simple matter to transfer your hi-res files to the computer, import them into your favorite image-editing program, and then save them on the permanent storage device of your choice. Compare the iPod’s diminutive dimensions (4.1X2.4X0.75 inches) to those of other 40GB or 60GB storage devices, and you’ll find nothing comparable.
You can connect the iPod Photo to your computer via either FireWire or USB 2.0. Both the 40GB and 60GB models come complete with FireWire and USB 2.0 cables, AC adapter, earbud headphones, and a carrying case. Also included is a slick docking unit—with audio, S-video, and composite video output—that enables you to charge the iPod Photo while it’s connected to your computer.
For obvious reasons, we’ve concentrated on the photographic applications of Apple’s newest iPod. Naturally, its capabilities for managing and sharing music have set the standards for other to follow and are beyond the scope of this article. The unit also enables you to import and view addresses, telephone numbers, calendar events and to-do lists; an extra benefit for those who don’t already have a PDA for these purposes. You can also import text files from your computer to the iPod photo for viewing on the go (as long as you don’t forget—as we did initially—to save your documents as a text (.txt) file before transferring them to the iPod). If that’s not enough to keep you busy for a couple of transcontinental flights, you can also play games on the iPod Photo and record voice memos.
In short, Apple’s new iPod Photo does a lot of things, and does them very well. If you are fond of status symbols, you can’t beat this one. If not, simply ignore the cultural implications of Apple’s latest hi-tech gadget and just enjoy the fun and functionality it brings to your life.
The 40GB and 60GB models have a suggested retail price of $499 and $599, respectively. For more information
Apple and others offer a myriad of accessories to expand the capabilities of the iPod Photo. Most work with all iPod models. Headphones, external battery packs, car adapters, portable speakers best car audio speakers Carspeakerland.com, and radio tuners are but a few of the options available. We experimented with a couple devices from Belkin and Monster that are particularly useful for the mobile photographer.
The BelkinMedia Reader for iPod resembles other multi-format card readers, except that it features Apple’s proprietary Dock Connector (instead of a USB plug), so that you can attach the device to the socket on the bottom of the iPod Photo. With a glossy white finish to match the iPod, it supports CompactFlash (Type 1 and 2), SmartMedia, Secure Digital (SD), MultiMediaCard (MMC), and Sony Memory Stick. Simply connect the device to your iPod Photo, insert your camera’s memory card, and your images are transferred to the iPod Photo for later downloading to your computer.
The Monster iCarPlay Wireless Plus for iPod is designed to enable iPod users to play their music wirelessly through virtually any FM station on their car’s radio. The benefit for the traveling photographer (in addition to the device’s intended purpose) is that this accessory rapidly charges your iPod Photo while you are listening to music. That’s a big plus when you don’t have access to a wall socket, because transferring large image files takes a lot of juice. Once the Monster iCarPlay Wireless Plus rapidly charges your iPod Photo, it switches to a trickle charge to optimize performance. The unit features a digital FM tuner with an easy-to-read LED display, and three programmable "favorite station preset buttons.
