Earth Day to May Day Resolution

Whereas, We have seen in the past few years “health and safety” and environmental regulations have been increasingly violated, disregarded, and dismantled by greedy, self serving actors like the Koch Brothers, proponents of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and other corporate entities.

Whereas, The Koch Brothers have been a major influence in dismantling workers rights, militarizing our borders, corrupting the media, and the destruction of the environment.

Whereas, The Koch Brothers heavily fund organizations and politicians that deny climate change and bust unions.

Whereas, The Koch Carbon Inc. facility is poisoning the community of Pittsburg, CA with petcoke dust ( a toxic by product of heavy crude refining.) that is highly carcinogenic and contains high concentrations of heavy metals.

Whereas, PG&E had a pipeline explosion in 2010 that killed 8 people and destroyed 38 homes. It was proven that they spiked gas pipeline pressure 10% over the legal, and only inspected corrosion but not welds, complete documentation is missing for about a quarter of its 1,800-plus pipeline miles, and many other health and safety issues.

Whereas, Chevron had a major fire almost 2 years ago after they clearly neglected the pipes corroding ignoring warnings from workers and inspectors for over a decade. This fire almost killed 14 refinery workers and sent 30,000 people to seek medical treatment because of air pollution.

Whereas, Chevron and PG&E’s lack of transparency and ignorance are a threat to the health and safety of workers, the community, and the environment.

Whereas, Union Pacific and other railroad companies have been endangering the workers, the community, and the environment by cutting back on health and safety standards and shipping tons of volatile oil through Martinez and the Bay Area every day.

Whereas, The Lac-Mégantic Derailment (a train derailment that killed 40 people and blew up half of the town) is a perfect example of how railroad companies endanger the workers, the community, and the environment.

Whereas, an Injury to One is an Injury to All.

Therefore be it Resolved that the (insert labor union or worker’s organization here) supports the defense of the “health and safety” of the workers, the community, and the planet we inhabit as a key demand of the Earth Day to May Day Direct Actions.

Be it Finally Resolved that the (insert labor union or worker’s organization here) send copies of this resolution and the attached flyer to its affiliates and members to encourage these bodies to mobilize for the Earth Day to May Day Assembly and Direct Actions

The Assembly is every Sunday until May– 2:00 PM – Mosswood Park Amphitheater (South-West Side of Mosswood Park) – MacArthur and Telegraph – Oakland – CA

Every Sunday until May Day, we are having an assembly at Mosswood Park Amphitheater to plan direct actions from April 22nd to May 1st that will raise awareness about the intersections of labor rights, indigenous rights, immigration rights, gentrification, and environmental justice issues. You can propose actions or events to fill in the days between may day and earth day. Examples include but are not limited to: film screenings, sit-ins, guerrilla gardening, pickets, marches, strikes, etc.

We have seen in the past few years “health and safety” and environmental regulations have been increasingly violated, disregarded, and dismantled by greedy, self serving actors like the Koch Brothers, proponents of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and other corporate and state entities. Indigenous People, workers, immigrants, and environmentalists are rising up across the world to take a stand to defend the Earth and their human rights.

From Earth Day to May Day we are going to step up our game in the Bay. Here we have a long history of taking effective direct actions to achieve our demands and now we are at the point where we must stand together and fight for Environmental Justice in our communities. With climate change upon us we can’t wait for the corporations to change. We must use direct action to see that our demands are met.

Organize with us!
